Homeschool books that have really been valuable.
There are tons of books out there about homeschooling and we have been through quite a few. I thought I would highlight the books that have been most valuable for our program.
The Well-Trained Mind - This book provides the framework that we use for our homeschool program. A nice resource for helping you decide how much time your child should be spending on school work depending on their grade. This is also one of the best resource guides for homeschooling books and materials that I have found.
Saxon Math – There are a lot of people that don’t like this math series but it has been a great success in our house.
Rod and Staff (English) – We only use the English series of books, so I can’t speak to the quality of their other series, but the books have really helped us structure on English and grammar portion of our program. If you run a secular homeschool program, then these books may not be for you as they are heavily linked to biblical stories.
The Story of the World – These history books are written by the same authors behind “The Well-Trained Mind.” We also use these books as part of our geography lessons. Every time a new country is mentioned in the books, the children must find it on the globe.
Free books and textbooks for homeschoolers.
Here are three great sites for free books:
Project Gutenberg is the first producer of free ebooks. Hundreds of books in their collection.
Global Text Project will create open content electronic textbooks that will be freely available from a website. Distribution will also be possible via paper, CD, or DVD.
Flat World Knowledge is a work in progress. The goal is to provide free college textbooks to all.
